Treatment Creative Option
My idea for my magazine is a women’s lifestyle magazine
aimed at a target audience age of 16-20. My magazine will include typical
subjects usually included in women’s lifestyles magazines including information
about beauty, boys, dieting and dating.
The print size of my magazine is A4 and it will contain 12
pages.
My magazine will include three double spreads. The first of
these is about how much sugar is in food (measured in teaspoons). For the first
double page spread I have researched the contents of sugar in food. This
article will give an in-depth discussion into the highs and lows of sugar your
intake- what’s safe and what’s not. The next double page spread counts down the
10 worst things that could happen to you before/whilst on a date. The countdown
will also include how to solve the problems from a spot making an appearance
when it’s not wanted down to needing the toilet at a totally inappropriate
time. The third double page spread tells the reader everything they need to
know about getting a job. The article will explain what clothes to wear, how to
express your confidence through body language and how to write the perfect
CV. My magazine could be compared to
something like Cosmopolitan magazine or Glamour magazine.
The target audience chosen for my magazine is female reader
aged 16 to 20 in the socioeconomic group B, C1, C2 and in the trendies’ tribe. The
two magazines I have said mine to be similar to are price ranged between £2 and
£4 and both of which are monthly magazines. As my magazine is similar to them
it will also be a monthly magazine and will include more content as it only
gets issued once a month.
Throughout my magazine there will be a constant theme that
will apply to all of my double page spreads although they will differ in some
ways. The ‘house style’ for my magazine will be bold block capital titles
(mainly in black). The language throughout my magazine will be quite colloquial
and laid back in a chatty style.
My articles will start with a question introduction so the
reader feels as though the writer is asking them the question personally. My
magazine will have a high image to text ratio with only small amounts of texts
dotted around the double page spreads. The majority of my imagery will be lit
with butterfly lighting although the imagery on the sugar article may not be as
light as it is explaining the dangers and badness surrounding sugar
consumption, giving a connotations of danger with dark lighting. My pages will
contain 3 columns excluding the ‘round up’ articles. Each of the double page
spreads in my magazine will have a different colour scheme but contain
similarities, for example, the bold black titles in the same font.
Newsagents will distribute my magazine, as my magazine will
be sold for a cover price of £1.00, 50p of which will be taken by the
distributing company and the newsagents. I chose this method as bought
magazines are bought by people who are generally interested by what they see
where as sending a free magazine out in a newspaper or door to door it will not
necessarily get read and it will waste printed copies.

Branding Objectives
|
|
What
is the genre of your magazine? What are you informing your audience about?
How
will it branded?
What
are the connotations of your branding decisions?
What
are the connotations of the magazine’s name?
|
The
genre of my magazine is women’s lifestyle. This will give my audience stories
and articles to read involving things that are included in a women’s
day-to-day lifestyle. This will include things like diets and dietary
information, dating do’s and don’ts and general fashion and beauty type
articles. The branding of my magazine will be the ‘trademark’ bold black
simple font used for main headers and titles. This will be seen throughout my
magazine on numerous pages. The connotations of the font are it is simple and
straight to the point what women are probably looking for in their magazines.
The plain black font will sometimes be changed a little and put together with
other coloured texts to show variation as well as the simple branded font.
The
name of my magazine is “(hashtag)fashionista”.
The connotations of this name are the hash tag, which make the magazine look
trendy as the hash tag is linked with social media sites like twitter and
Facebook. ‘fashionista’ suggests that the magazine will contain trendy topics
involving fashion and will also include things that ‘fashionable’ people
would like to read.

tribe either trendies or townies, these being the too ‘tribes’ that “normal”
people and people interested in fashion would be included in. My magazine is
targeted completely towards female readers with a socioeconomic status of B,
C1, C2.

Overview
|
|
Double Page 1
Title,
content and article type
|
The
first of my three double page spreads is titled “so you think you’ve got a
sweet tooth?” The content of this article will explain to the reader how much
sugar contents are in certain foods. It will explain the amount of sugar in
teaspoon measurements so it is easier to understand the amount, rather than
saying it in grams. The article will be written in a ‘round up’ style. I will
include the facts in small sinarios common in a women’s lifestyle. Each small
situation will be written into a short paragraph and each paragraph will
surround a main centre image. In the main centre image, my model will be blowing
a huge pink bubble with bubble-gum – relating to the ‘sweet’ theme.
|
|
Double Page 2
Title,
content and article type
|
My
second double page spread will be titled “Top 10 dating disasters”. This
article is in the style of a countdown, counting down from 10 to 1. It will
include things that could happen to a women before a date or whilst on a date
and how to solve it if it happens, for example, needing the toilet at an
inappropriate time or a huge spot appearing right before a date. I will start
this article with a statement introduction as this will involve the reader
and make them feel the situation is actually happening.
|
|
Double page 3
Title,
content and article type
|
My
final double page spread will be titled “bag that job!” This article will
cover all aspects of helping the reader get a job. It will talk about the
‘perfect’ CV, how to present yourself at an interview (body language,
speaking etc.) and of course will help the reader choose the best outfit for
interviewing/first day at the job.

Distribution objectives
|
|
Free
to view, supplement, and retail? Circulation: how many and why this
number?
Outlets
and rationale:
Pricing:
premium, mid or free to view? Why?
Print
quality: Discuss print finishing, magazine size, paper quality. Number of
pages.
Advertising
to content ratio
|
My
magazine will be sold in newsagents as I believe it is more likely to be read
if someone is choosing to buy it rather than giving out free to everyone.
Also, as my target audience is so niche, sending it to everyone or as a supplement
would suggest that not many people would read it at all, in theory wasting
printing. My magazine cover price will be £1, 50p profit and 50p to the
distribution company. I chose a low price because as this is the first issue
people may not want to pay a high price for something that they may not enjoy
reading. Also as the magazine only contains 12 pages, not many people would
like to pay more for so little pages. Another point being my target audience
(females ages 16 to 20) may not have enough disposable income to afford to
pay out a high price for a magazine. The quality of the paper used for my
magazine will be quite high because people are paying for it; they will
expect some level of quality rather than newspaper style paper. The content
to advertising ratio is quite high (more content that advertising).

control Objectives

“So
you think you’ve got a sweet tooth?”
This
article will be written in a round up style, in short paragraphs. It will be
around 800 words long with a high image to text ratio. I will use a question
introduction to pull the reader in. The purpose of the article to inform
people on hidden sugar in foods that we come across regularly.
“Top
10 dating disasters!”
This
article will be around 1000 words long and will help people who have
embarrassing problems happen to them. It will give quick short term fixes to
help the reader get themselves out of an embarrassing situation. The article
will start with a statement introduction so that the reader feels like it has
happened.
“Bag
that job!”
This
article gives you the guidelines on how to get the job you want. It will

‘perfect’ CV. This article will be about 1000 words long.

Image
content objectives
|
“So
you think you’ve got a sweet tooth?”
The
imagery for this article will be bright coloured and brightly lit to fit the
theme of sweets. Although the colours, layout and imagery will be quite
light, the article has a deeper meaning and explains the dangers of sugar so
in my imagery I will include dark shadows in contrast to everything else. The
imagery used will be active as my model will be blowing a huge bubble with
bubble-gum. This will give a connotation that sugar can be fun but along with
the shadows it can also be dangerous.
“Top
10 dating disasters!”
The
photo-shoot for this page is going to consist of a small ‘date’ set up, a
little table with a boy and a girl sat at either side. The girl’s facial
expressions will look worried as though something has gone wrong. The
lighting will be quite dark to suggest romance and give a connotation that
something is going badly.
“Bag
that job!”
In
the photo-shoot for this article, my model will be wearing smart clothes as
though they work in an office or bank. This will give the reader a window to
their future self. The imagery will go by the rule of thirds, with the models
eye line in the top third of the page. My model will be stood with her hands
on her hips and smiling. This will suggest that she is happy in her job and
is in control. I will use butterfly lighting so that she is bright and the
photo has a positive feel to it apposed to a dark image with a negative feel.

|
Language
Control Objectives
|
In
each of the three articles the tone of the article will be quite laid back
and relaxed with the use of colloquial language and mild taboo words.
“So
you think you’ve got a sweet tooth?”
This
article is mainly fact based although does include small situations. The
beginning of the situations will start with question introduction. At a first
look the article will look and sound positive but will have a negative twist
on it towards the end. The text to image ratio is quite equal.
“Top
10 dating disasters!”
This
article will begin with a question introduction. It will ask the reader if
“this has ever happened to you?” It will then go on to explain how to solve
the problem. There will be a high text to image ratio on this page, unlike
the others. The tone of this article will be quite up beat to make the
‘disasters’ sound not so bad.
“Bag
that job!”
This
article will make the reader feel confident in getting a job. It will start
with a descriptive introduction, describing how you would feel if you had
just been offered the job you wanted. The image to text ratio will be quite
equal. The ‘read-speed’ of this article will be quite fast to make the reader
feel as though they are learning new things and moving on, towards getting a
new job.

|
Colour
control objectives
|
“So
you think you’ve got a sweet tooth?”
The
colour scheme on this page is candy pink and black and white. This shows the
hidden meaning of this article as although at a first look it may look like a
happy article about sweets the black suggests the darker side to the article.
“Top
10 dating disasters!”
The
colour scheme on this page will be black and red. This red is a connotation
of danger or disaster, the black could be seen as this too. The use of the
three-colour rule will be used on this spread (black, white and red). The
background will be white so that the back and red text will contrast.
“Bag
that job!”

Typography
objectives
|
For
all three of my articles the same fonts will be used in different ways. The
titles of all articles and contents page will be in
Bebas
neue and the article will be written in Tahoma. Although the same fonts will be used they will
vary in colour, size and angle.
|
|
Layout
objectives
|
“So
you think you’ve got a sweet tooth?”
They
layout of this article will have a large image of my model blowing a
bubble-gum bubble in the centre of the double page spread. Surrounding this
image will be small boxes containing situations that the reader will have
been in before, helping them relate to the text. The title and kicker will be
in the left top corner spread to nearly the other edge of the page. An
introduction paragraph will be underneath the kicker. Down the right hand
side of the page will be a break out box including a little ‘quiz’. The title
and kicker will lead the reader’s eye towards the centre picture as that is
where it is pointing.
“Top
10 dating disasters!”
This
articles layout will be a count down, starting with number 10 underneath the
title and kicker in the top left corner and ending at number 1 in the bottom
right hand corner. Each section will have a number next to it (in bigger and
bolder font that the text itself). The imagery will sit in the middle of the
count down, position slightly to the right hand side.
“Bag
that job!”
The
imagery will be positioned down the left hand edge of the page with the title
at the top, centred. This article will have two or three columns with a
helpful quote insert blown up in the middle of the text. Key words like ‘bag’
(as it is partly a fashion article) will be in bold.
